Art Therapy Services

What is Art Therapy

What is art therapy?

Art therapy is a profession that trains professionals in both art and therapy.  Art therapists understand human development, psychological theories and the artistic process.   Art therapists work with people of all ages, individuals, couples, families, groups, schools and communities.  They provide services that include mental health, rehabilitation, medical/ behavioral, community-based outreach, wellness and preventative, school based, open art studio experiences and independent practices.   Art therapists are artists!

Why art therapy?

Art therapy is often referred to as a “non-verbal” approach, supporting the idea that creating artwork is therapeutic.  Art therapy is an alternative way for children and adults to express feelings that may be difficult to express verbally. Throughout the art process, the art therapist’s job is to create a safe environment to express by using various media of choice such as painting, drawing, clay, collage, sculpture, mask making etc.   Art Therapy promotes relaxation.
